Former workers, known as valets, are suing an elite men's club for alleged labor violations. The Bohemian Club has been associated with right-wing political figures, including Clarence Thomas. The suit names Bohemian Club treasurer William Dawson as someone who directly asked employees to "falsify payroll records." The club is also known for hosting "Lakeside Talks," where members, often those of the political elite, speak about policy ideas. The Bohemian Club and a lawyer for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake had just struck Rio Dell, California, upending homes and lives for the community of 3,400 people near Oregon. “It’s a gamble to not have it,” Rio Dell City Manager Kyle Knopp said. A whopping 90% of homes in California aren’t covered by earthquake insurance, according to Glenn Pomeroy, CEO of the California Earthquake Authority, a nonprofit quake insurer established by the state. Gavin Newsom proclaimed an emergency for Humboldt County, where Rio Dell is located, in part to help local governments access services. Despite seeing how costly earthquake damage can be, she doubts she’ll buy earthquake insurance for her next home.

A Bay Area Subway franchisee paid staff more than $265,000 in bounced checks, the DOL said. The stores also violated child-labor laws, kept tips, and got staff to falsify records, a DOL investigation said. Between July 26 and December 26, 2022, alone, 297 checks bounced from just one bank account belonging to one of Meza's businesses, a DOL investigator said in a declaration. The investigation by the DOL's Wage and Hour Division covered 14 franchise stores in total, but the department did not say how many had given bad checks to staff. Meza's business associate also threatened to file a false police report against two 15-year-old employees who asked for their unpaid wages, the DOL wrote in the lawsuit.
